Fear Factor: Bringing digital technology to the public sector
Digital technology has infiltrated almost every aspect of our lives. From mobile phone technology to smart homes, we’re always switched on. However, there are still several areas of our society that are yet to catch up when it comes to harnessing the power of technology.
As a healthcare technology startup, we work with NHS Trusts to deliver asset tagging, tracking and management solutions to hospitals and surgeries. We’re using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and Fixed Location Beacons (FLB), alongside a bespoke mobile app and desktop platform, to reimagine medical equipment management in the NHS.
While the benefits of FloKi’s technology are abundant, the implementation and delivery of such cutting-technology in a traditionally analogue sector presents a number of challenges. Firstly, within any institution as established and important as the NHS, you’ll find established roles and attitudes that aren’t always easy to break free from.
When faced with new technology, employees have one of a few different reactions. For many, it’s an exciting time to bring tangible improvements to their working lives and boost their capacity to do their jobs, however for others it may present fears regarding automation, employment and among others.
The way we see it, we shouldn’t ignore these attitudes. Instead, we should embrace them. By including individuals from the full spectrum in the discussion from early in the progress, we can ensure that all concerns are given the respect and response they deserve.
Become an Early Adopter
By listening to the need of the users, we can make sure that every iteration of the platform is relevant to the user. One way we do this is by running User Acceptance Testing with all Early Adopters to the FloKi platform. In these sessions, we listen first-hand to the thoughts and feelings of those who will use our technology every single day. After all, who knows the problems we’re solving better than them? No one.
Whether you’re a technology provider faced with resistance or an employee affected by the implementation of new tech, we want to give you one key take-home: we won’t succeed in our mission to improve the efficiency, reduce costs and save money without buy-in at all levels.
